Countries in the region advance in the implementation of labor migration mechanisms

With the purpose to strengthen and expand regular channels for labor migration, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) together with the Member Countries of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM), and with the participation of civil society, represented by the Regional Network of Civil Organizations for Migration (RNCOM), met to review the results of the Needs Assessment Study on Labor Migration Mechanisms developed by the Western Hemisphere Program.

Central American and Caribbean Legislative Authorities Seek to Advance Legislation on Migration Linked to the Impacts of Climate Change

Recognizing the current and future challenges related to migration caused by disasters, climate change and environmental degradation, the Member States of the Forum of Presidents of Legislative  Authorities of Central America and the Caribbean (FOPREL), with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), highlighted the need to advance in the formulation of regulatory frameworks that incorporate migration for environmental reasons at the Ordinary Meeting of FOPREL held on March 13, 14 and 15 in San José, Costa Rica.

Local governments prepare to take a more active role in migration management

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in coordination with the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM), held the II Regional Meeting on Capacity Building for Local Governments on Migration and Human Mobility in order to provide tools to strengthen the capacities of local governments to address migration in order to improve migration management from a comprehensive approach.

FOPREL and IOM Inaugurate Training Program in the Region on Migration due to Climate Change with a Gender Perspective with the Costa Rican Legislative Congress

IOM strengthens capacities of governments in the region to manage crises and disasters caused by climate change

San Jose - May 18, 2023.  IOM, in partnership with the Coordination Center for Disaster Prevention in Central America and the Dominican Republic (CEPREDENAC), developed the first generation of the course "Comprehensive Approach to Migration in Crisis Situations and Migration due to Climate Change". The course was attended by 22 people involved in risk management and climate change at governmental level in Mexico, Central America and the Dominican Republic, as well as officials from the Central American Integration System (SICA).

To address these changing and concerning trends, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Implementing Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS), hosted a one-of-a-kind meeting on drafting legislation to counter migrant smuggling in the region that can respond to regional and national needs.

IOM launches diaspora organizations survey to support Eastern Caribbean government engagement

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched the Diaspora Groups of the Eastern Caribbean: Opportunities, Challenges, and Needs of Collaboration, in a step to further enhance engagement between governments of the region and their diaspora communities. The launch was done at a virtual event with participation from representatives of IOM, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the Government of Grenada, and the University of the West Indies.

IOM Presents Curaçao Needs Assessment on Migration Governance

Among the main needs identified were the need to create, implement and coordinate a migration policy and strategy focused on the socioeconomic integration of migrants and to improve capacities for dealing with migrants who are detained. In the area of protection and assistance, the protection of asylum seekers was identified as an area for improvement, as well as the importance of guaranteeing humanitarian assistance to migrants through comprehensive policies that are reflected in greater access to employment, health, and human development.

Esta crisis humanitaria en curso se pone de manifiesto en una serie de informes sobre migrantes desaparecidos en la región, publicados hoy por el Proyecto Migrantes Desaparecidos de la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM).
