CARICOM government representatives gather to draft regional counter-smuggling of migrants' legislation

Recent data from the Caribbean has suggested that there have been increases in the number of migrants being smuggled around the region. To address these changing and concerning trends, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Implementing Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS), hosted a one-of-a-kind meeting on drafting legislation to counter migrant smuggling in the region that can respond to regional and national needs.

IOM launches diaspora organizations survey to support Eastern Caribbean government engagement

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched the Diaspora Groups of the Eastern Caribbean: Opportunities, Challenges, and Needs of Collaboration, in a step to further enhance engagement between governments of the region and their diaspora communities. The launch was done at a virtual event with participation from representatives of IOM, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the Government of Grenada, and the University of the West Indies.

IOM Presents Curaçao Needs Assessment on Migration Governance

Among the main needs identified were the need to create, implement and coordinate a migration policy and strategy focused on the socioeconomic integration of migrants and to improve capacities for dealing with migrants who are detained. In the area of protection and assistance, the protection of asylum seekers was identified as an area for improvement, as well as the importance of guaranteeing humanitarian assistance to migrants through comprehensive policies that are reflected in greater access to employment, health, and human development.

IOM promotes crisis communication in emergency contexts that includes migrants

Following the statement that "a message communicated in time can save a person's life", the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has developed the Practical Guide for Communicating in the Context of Migratory Crises. This seeks to strengthen the capacities of States and various actors to ensure the inclusion of migrants in emergency prevention, preparedness and response systems, while safeguarding their dignity and rights.

RCM analyzes the work of employment counselors in the integration of migrants

On October 29, more than 50 people from the member countries of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM) concluded a training and awareness-raising process for employment counselors. The course sought to provide context on labour migration in the region, inform about the profiles of migrants and improve practices for their inclusion in the labour market.

IOM and IIN start specialized virtual course about migrant children in the Americas

On October 20, 2021, the third edition of the "Specialized virtual course on migrant children in the Americas" opened with a discussion on the rights of migrant children and adolescents. This is part of a joint effort between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Institute for Children and Adolescents of the Organization of American States (IIN-OAS).

IOM and ILO lead global conversation on labour migration in the age of digitalization

The International Forum on Digitalization, Migration and Development promoted by IOM and ILO, analyzed how migrant workers are involved in socio-labour dynamics that do not escape the new trends that the future of work presents, and digitalization could contribute to safe, orderly and regular labour migration under decent work conditions.These tools include the creation of innovative digital platforms of public institutions; new systems to process work permits quickly and expeditiously by virtual means, with a focus on the protection of public health; to the adoption of laws that encourage the mobility of "digital nomads", willing to telework from anywhere in the world.
