IOM, OHCHR and UNODC Join Efforts to Strengthen Humanitarian Border Management in Mexico and Central America

IOM, OHCHR and UNODC have collaborated to address the growing migration flow in Central America by strengthening humanitarian border management through a joint training that took place from November 25-29, 2024, in Esquipulas, Guatemala. Twenty-two officials from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras participated in the training to improve their border management skills through theoretical and practical tools and exposure to operational procedures developed by Guatemalan authorities.

IOM promotes cross-sectoral dialogue on ethical recruitment as key to guaranteeing rights of migrant workers

SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA. 25 August 2023. As part of the “Program to Strengthen Ethical Recruitment Practices and Capacity Building for Relevant Actors” in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica, IOM completed a series of efforts focused on ethical recruitment, prevention of smuggling and trafficking of migrant workers, human rights and protection, and regulation of the hiring process in a cross-border migration context.

Civil organizations from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama sign declaration to promote ethical recruitment of migrant workers

June 2nd – SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA. Civil society organizations from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama and the United States that provide human rights assistance and support to migrant workers signed a document consisting of 15 agreements to promote the principles of ethical recruitment. This declaration affirms their commitment to the migrant worker population and their rights in countries of origin, transit and destination.

More than 160 communication professionals from six countries specialize in addressing migration

 

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has developed a series of training processes focused on providing tools for ethical coverage of migration based on international law and evidence. A total of 162 professionals from national and local print media, television, radio and digital media, as well as communicators from public institutions in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama were trained.

OIM strengthens capacities in 7 countries to protect and assist migrants

Officials from 7 countries were trained on protection and assistance for migrants vulnerable to violence, exploitation and abuse. The activity was attended by representatives of migration institutes or directorates, consulates and entities responsible for the shelter and protection systems of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Panama and Costa Rica.
