Mexico, Central America and the Dominican Republic Prepare to Address Climate Change-Driven Migration Crisis

In response to the need to strengthen the capacities of relevant government and regional agency personnel in aspects related to migration driven by climate change and other environmental factors, the Regional Workshop on Migration Crises and Migration in Contexts of Disasters and Climate Change was organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with the support of the Coordination Center for Disaster Prevention in Central America and the Dominican Republic (CEPREDENAC).

IOM promotes crisis communication in emergency contexts that includes migrants

Following the statement that "a message communicated in time can save a person's life", the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has developed the Practical Guide for Communicating in the Context of Migratory Crises. This seeks to strengthen the capacities of States and various actors to ensure the inclusion of migrants in emergency prevention, preparedness and response systems, while safeguarding their dignity and rights.

Border personnel in Panama exchanged experiences concerning migration management in emergency contexts

Participants included members of the different coordination mechanisms for migration management with presence in the two border provinces of Panama, Darien and Chiriqui. Topics discussed included inter-institutional coordination mechanisms for migrant populations in vulnerable situations, how the Human Mobility Group of the United Nations System in Panama works, and a tour of the Los Planes de Gualaca Migrant Reception Station (MRS). The participants accompanied the reception of 1,047 migrants who arrived in 19 buses from Darien, thus learning part of the dynamics within the MRS.

IOM Provides Border Workshops for Emergency Prevention and Response in the Dominican Republic

More than 300 officials from national and provincial institutions, social organizations, the army and national police participated in workshops for the management of Collective Centers in response to emergencies, organized by IOM. This is part of the initiatives to prevent emergencies in countries vulnerable to natural disasters or conflicts.

Costa Rica includes the issue of mobility in its third National Disaster Risk Management Meeting

 

The objective of this initiative is to contribute to the strengthening of community capacities, promoting links between local actors in disaster risk management processes at the territorial level. The meeting provided opportunities for reflection and training and exchanges of good practices, experiences and lessons learned to address the issue at the community level.

Honduras: COPECO AND SINAGER Better Prepared for the Protection of Migrants During Emergencies

In an initial workshop, using the methodology of "Training of Trainers", IOM trained 25 Civil Protection volunteers and COPECO staff. Subsequently, the participants themselves replicated the acquired knowledge with 65 more staffmembers from the National Risk Management System (SINAGER) and COPECO, at both the central and local levels.

Migration Officers Strengthen Their Capabilities to Communicate During Crises

A message transmitted in time can save someone’s life. With this premise, the Commission of Migration Authorities (OCAM) of the member countries of the Central America Integration System (SICA), in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), developed a regional workshop on emergency and migratory crisis communication. Migration officials from the areas of communication, press, migration control, and care for migrants from 8 different OCAM member countries, participated in a three-day workshop (May 18, 19, and 20) on the essential role of communication in these issues.

  IOM trains COPECO in the inclusion of migrants during emergencies and crises in Honduras

On May 11, 12 and 14, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted a virtual event in which 25 volunteers from the Permanent Contingency Commission of Honduras (COPECO) participated in training sessions on migration. The knowledge acquired will enable them to strengthen their capacities to contribute to better inclusion of the migrant population in emergency and crisis preparedness and response.
