During the months of June and July, in the border towns of Dajabón, Montecristi and Mao (Northwest Region of the Dominican Republic), Elías Piña and Pedernales, more than 300 officials from national and provincial institutions, social organizations, the army and national police participated in workshops for the management of Collective Centers in response to emergencies, organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This is part of the initiatives to prevent emergencies in countries vulnerable to natural disasters or conflicts.

Representatives of the Dominican Red Cross, the various provincial governments, the Civil Defense, the Directorate-General for Migration, the Army of the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Youth among other institutions held a technical exchange with IOM, to discuss humanitarian principles, MICIC standards (migrants in countries in crisis) and management of shelters in time of COVID-19.

Santos Miguel Román, IOM Border Coordinator in the Dominican Republic, as well as Ildefonso Cruz, IOM Desk Officer in the Dajabón office, participated in the three workshops as facilitators.

The meetings provided SWOT analysis of provincial emergency response capacities and agreements were made on the need to develop the provincial emergency response plan.

These workshops are conducted within the framework of IOM’s Western Hemisphere Program, funded by the United States Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration
