New Information Hub on Migration opens in San Luis Potosi, the eighteenth in Mexico

San Luis Potosí (Mexico) - The city of San Luis Potosí became today the eighteenth place in Mexico from which the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and municipal authorities will offer updated and truthful information for migrants to carry out their migratory processes in an informed, regular and safe manner.

"We want to enable the cohesion and integration of the migrant population in Mexico, regardless of their migratory situation and status, which implies the recognition of migrants as active members of the societies to which they belong, to the communities that welcome them and to which they can contribute for their development," said Dana Graber Ladek, Head of Mission of IOM Mexico, today at the signing ceremony of the agreement that creates this new service.  

The information hubs are centers that provide information on migration procedures, services for migrants, risks of irregular migration and options for regular migration. They are coordinated by state and municipal authorities, with technical support from IOM. The hubs are intended to contribute to better migration management and to promote the protection of migrants, among other purposes.     

In his speech at the opening of this new center, Alfredo Lujambio Cataño, Municipal President of San Luis Potosí, stressed that migration is a pressing phenomenon that enriches the local culture of San Luis Potosí.  

"We understand the relevance and we want migration to be an opportunity of humanitarian kindness to find a better future for all people, both native and in transit. For the people of San Luis Potosi it is a great opportunity to sign this agreement for the proper attention of migration between the government of the city of San Luis Potosi and IOM," he added.  

The San Luis Potosí Hub, which is being inaugurated at a time when there are more intense migratory flows in Mexico, will be in charge of the municipal authority, and will be constantly accompanied by IOM to receive technical advice through training workshops, informative material and institutional strengthening.    

With the incorporation of San Luis Potosí, there are now 18 information hubs in Mexico,  a fraction of over 40 currently operating in nine countries in the Mesoamerican and Caribbean regions.  

This IOM support is mainly developed within the framework of the Western Hemisphere Program, funded by the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration of the U.S. Department of State.
