IOM and ILO lead global conversation on labour migration in the age of digitalization

The International Forum on Digitalization, Migration and Development promoted by IOM and ILO, analyzed how migrant workers are involved in socio-labour dynamics that do not escape the new trends that the future of work presents, and digitalization could contribute to safe, orderly and regular labour migration under decent work conditions.These tools include the creation of innovative digital platforms of public institutions; new systems to process work permits quickly and expeditiously by virtual means, with a focus on the protection of public health; to the adoption of laws that encourage the mobility of "digital nomads", willing to telework from anywhere in the world.

Communication for Development Campaigns Address How Migration Information Needs Changed in the Face of the Pandemic in Mexico and Central America

More than 110 government institutions, civil society organizations and community leaders in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) presented their Communication for Development campaigns in August and September 2021. These initiatives were developed through evidence-based and participatory strategies that included more than 2,000 people from all communities involved for baselines, creations, and validations.

Border personnel in Panama exchanged experiences concerning migration management in emergency contexts

Participants included members of the different coordination mechanisms for migration management with presence in the two border provinces of Panama, Darien and Chiriqui. Topics discussed included inter-institutional coordination mechanisms for migrant populations in vulnerable situations, how the Human Mobility Group of the United Nations System in Panama works, and a tour of the Los Planes de Gualaca Migrant Reception Station (MRS). The participants accompanied the reception of 1,047 migrants who arrived in 19 buses from Darien, thus learning part of the dynamics within the MRS.

Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic Strengthened their Tools to Combat Migrant Smuggling

The activity sought to strengthen intergovernmental response capacity, continue the training of the police forces of Panama and Costa Rica in the prevention of migrant smuggling and learn first-hand the best practices implemented by the Dominican Republic in the investigation and prosecution of human trafficking and migrant smuggling crimes, as a reference country due to the progress it has made in this topic.

IOM and FLACSO Costa Rica Train Communication Professionals from Mexico and Central America to Address Migration

More than 50 journalists and media professionals from 6 countries participated in the first edition of the Specialized Course on Communication and Migration provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The course promotes an ethical and responsible production of migration-related information and the comprehensive approach to this phenomenon in informative content.

IOM and RCM Strengthen Local Government Capacities in Mesoamerica with Policy and Governance Training Program

The Training Program on Migration Policy and Governance with a Focus on Local and Municipal Levels consisted of the virtual module Migration Trends in Latin America and three synchronous sessions. Participants enjoyed a panel with representatives of the local governments of Costa Rica and El Salvador, and the Federation of Local Governments of Latin America (FLACMA), who addressed the main needs and priorities identified for local migration governance. Subsequently, a space for group work made it possible to collectively build some recommendations from the perspectives of communities of destination, origin, return and transit.

Latin American Local Governments Join IOM in Search of Better Local Governance of Migration

More than 100 people from 24 countries met on August 4 in the "Seminar on International Migration and Local Development: Challenges and Benefits of Good Migration Governance at the Local Level". The activity presented the methodology and experiences around the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI), a comprehensive IOM tool that was created to support countries in the implementation of target 10.7 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Costa Rica: IOM and the Municipality of Mora Inaugurate Municipal Center for Migrants

 

MCM staff are trained by the General Directorate for Migration and Aliens (DGME) on issues related to migration regularization. In addition, staff receive training for differentiated care, in accordance with the different profiles and needs of migrants, with the aim of providing a more comprehensive service.

Costa Rica: General Directorate of Migration and Aliens mentions joint work with IOM at the United Nations Migration Network

Representatives of the agencies of the United Nations Migration Network for Costa Rica participated virtually in the forum "Advances Costa Rica for a Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration". Costa Rica presented the progress in the implementation of the initiatives at the national level 2018 - 2022. As Costa Rica is a country of origin, transit and destination of migrants, the DGME recognized the work carried out jointly with IOM, especially the initiatives developed through the Regional Program on Migration.
