IOM supports Mexico in the economic recovery of migrant workers

The working population in Mexico has been strongly affected by the economic situation generated by COVID-19. The Mexican Social Security Institute reported that, by the end of May, 838.272 jobs had disappeared, 340.000 of them in just one month. Migrant workers have not been exemptedand the situation has been particularly hard on those working in commerce and domestic work, two sectors heavily affected by the physical distancing measures.

IOM successfully concludes regional diploma course on labour migration

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Independent Monitoring Group of El Salvador (GMIES) held the closing ceremony of the Diploma on Labor Migration on June 30, with technical assistance from the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Specialized Institute of Higher Education for Diplomatic Training (IEESFORD).

IOM produces Creole-language posters for the prevention of COVID-19 in the Dominican Republic's private sector

Santo Domingo - Given the characteristics of the construction sector in the Dominican Republic, which has approximately 95,000 Haitian migrant workers, the International Organization for Migration has formed a strategic alliance with ACOPROVI (the Association of Construction and Housing Developers) to work together to improve the conditions of migrant workers.

IOM promotes improvements to the work permit system for foreigners in Costa Rica

The International Organization for Migration in Costa Rica (IOM), in conjunction with the International Labor Organization (ILO), has been supporting the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) and the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners (DGME) since 2019 in strengthening Costa Rica's labour migration system. As part of this partnership, on Tuesday, June 23, IOM made a significant donation to the MTSS Labor Migration Department.

Government and private sector to be trained to include migrants in post COVID-19 economic recovery

Mexicali, Baja California – Aiming to underline the importance of migration in any development process, and even in the economic recovery after COVID-19, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Mexico and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have joined the State Comission of Human Rights of Baja California (CEDHBC) to present an online training plan for government officials and the private sector. This will promote the social and economic inclusion of people in human mobility contexts in the country.

Labor migration management efforts in the region redoubled with new IOM-ILO agreement

On December 11, 2019 Marcelo Pisani, the director of IOM for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and Carmen Muñoz, the director of ILO Office for Central America, Haiti, Panama and the Dominican Republic, signed a collaboration agreement between their two United Nations agencies in order to continue with a wide range of joint actions on labor migration.
