Since 2016, the Regional Migration Program: Mesoamerica- The Caribbean has used “Informarte en Movimiento” [Inform Yourself on the Move], a virtual community on Facebook, as a platform for informing and raising awareness among migrants in the region about the risks of irregular migration (such as human trafficking), regular migration pathways, the integration of migrants, and more.  In order to improve its informational work and the versatility of its brand, the Informarte en Movimiento community will become “Somos Colmena” [We Are a Hive].

“Somos Colmena” is the updated virtual community, whose goal is to provide information that promotes regular and safe migration, as well as the human rights and integration of migrants. “Somos Colmena” will also be a space to share messages and campaigns carried out by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) using communication for development processes in Mesoamerican communities, as well as messages from governments, civil society, and organizations and agencies that work with these populations.

“Within the migration contexts that people experience in Mesoamerica, providing accurate and trustworthy information about migration is a fundamental necessity,” stated Tatiana Chacón, Communication Official of the Program. “Somos Colmena” is inspired by the sense of community that bees have, working for the wellbeing of all, and by the value of communication to the community. “There is a great need for platforms with accurate and accessible information that facilitates regular and safe migration,” added Chacón.

In addition to changing the name of the Facebook page from “Informarte in Movimiento,” the “Somos Colmena” virtual community will have profiles on other social networks, such as Instagram.
