Tijuana, Mexico, February 28, 2019.  33 migrants have been hired thanks to the “Second Municipal Job Fair for migrants” which was held February 27-28 in the Patio Central of the Municipal Palace of Tijuana.  18 companies with 746 job vacancies participated, and 256 migrants attended.

The fair was organized by the International Organization for Migration with the Mayor’s Office of Tijuana, Baja California, the National Employment Service (SNE), and the Municipal Directorate for Migrant Assistance. The companies used job matching techniques to match people's labor profiles with available vacancies.

“The job fair aimed at reaching people in the context of migration, that is, all migrants who pass through our municipality for any reason or circumstance, and we as the National Employment Service are focused on providing opportunities for them to find a job and a better quality of life,” highlighted Nayla C. Rangel Franco, Coordinator of the Tijuana Regional Unit of the National Employment Service.

“In my country I worked in construction, in bricklaying, in landscaping. I believe I have a lot to offer the community, and I’m grateful that the institutions are helping us to stay and get jobs,” commented Octavio, a Honduran migrant.

One of the main objectives of the Western Hemisphere Migration Program (known as Mesoamerica Program) is to build government capacities for migration governance; “this includes alliances with local governments to develop municipal programs like this one, which promote the integration of migrants into the labor market through inclusive labor migration policies,” stated Gustavo Gutiérrez, National Coordinator of the Program in Mexico.

“This Fair is the first step of our labour migration strategy which the Program is implementing in Mexico, recognizing migration as a contributor to development in both the country of origin and the country of destination,” added Gutiérrez.

IOM incentivizes interinstitutional collaboration to build the capacities of local and state governments to  develop policies and practices that benefit migrants and the community sectors where they live.
